What Is a Catalytic Converter?

A catalytic converter, sometimes called a catalytic converter, is an exhaust emission control device which converts exhaust gases and pollutants from an internal combustion engine to less-polluting gases by catalyzing an electrochemical reaction. This device is made out of two or more copper electrodes. Electrodes are placed in the intake manifold of the engine. As the engine starts up, an electrical charge flows through the wires that are connected to the electrodes. When the engine is running, the pressure of the generated electricity causes the flow of the charged particles to become compressed so that it becomes more like water than gasoline. The compression forces the gasses to move along a path which is longer than the speed of the compressed air, which in turn causes the gasses to be collected at the rear of the catalytic converter. The gasses that are collected are separated by a small channel. In the channel, a thin film of nitrogen is laid down. The purpose of the catalytic converter is to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides, which are often highly toxic to the environment, contained in the exhaust gases and pollutants.

It has been found that most cars that are on the road have some level of catalytic converters. In fact, these devices are an important part of any emissions testing program for automobiles. Under such programs, emissions testing of automotive technician are done at regular intervals. These emissions tests to check the effect of various emission sources, which are typically present in most cars, on the environment. A catalytic converter actually reduces the amount of nitrogen oxides that are released into the atmosphere.

The Catalytic converter is used to reduce emission levels of diesel and fuel powered vehicles. In fact, there are several different types of catalytic converters that are available in the market. Depending upon the type of engine that is being used and the kind of fuel used, the kind of converter that is required will vary. There are many automotive technicians who specialise in this field and they are well trained to understand the requirements of each specific vehicle and make.

Many people are not aware that carbon monoxide and oxygen are both considered harmful to the environment. Both of these pollutants have the capacity to cause a wide range of adverse effects. Carbon monoxide is a tasteless and odourless gas, which is produced when gas is burned. This causes wide-ranging health problems, which can include dizziness and unconsciousness. On the other hand, carbon dioxide is a poisonous gas, which causes severe headaches, nausea and vomiting. A catalytic converter can reduce both the levels of carbon monoxide and oxygen in the exhaust system, thereby ensuring that both these pollutants are reduced.  If you want to know more about this topic, then click here:  https://www.encyclopedia.com/science-and-technology/technology/technology-terms-and-concepts/catalytic-converter.
